Hunting
Weimaraner is a hunting breed - HPR(hunt, point, retrieve) breed to be exact, and it has been greated for hunting and has served in this purpose from the breeds early age to the modernday. The breeds ancestors are said to been first in the breeds early age specialiced to the big game(like deer) and later on when the hunting of small game started to be more popular among the hunters they started to breed the weimaraners to the direction of hunt, point & retrieve -breed that they are now and had been since the first standart was written.
The dogs I use for breeding are hunting merited and cabable dogs in basic hunting. For a HPR breed is crusial to give the dog a systematic training for the work; Even if all the instincts would be there, the dog has to be in control of the owner to work well in it's original purpose. He needs to wait and point until the owner gives him the command "avance", He needs to stay calm after the shoot and not run after the flying birds, he needs to retrieve the shot bird to the hands of the owner...etc. I hope all of the puppybyers will understand why I won't sell the puppies for a home where their insticts for hunting are not nurtured.
Hunting exams in Finland
KAER -exam is a special exam for continetal pointers. It's more like a field trial, than a basic hunting exam used in many countries. It is meant to test not only the natural ability of the dog, but also obidience and working together with the owner. In the KAER field trial the dog has to show willing to hunt, good covering the field that finds the game. The dog has to show pointing/avance/calm on shot(the dog has to stop after avance) and the retrieving from land. Water work exam (retrieving from the water) is a part of our KAER field trial and it is done separately - one water work exam is valid for one exam season, so it has to be done every year before KAER exams.
